Description for 2020/21

The module consists of the preparation of an independently researched critical appraisal, in the form of a 4000-5000 word essay, of the current level of understanding of a particular disease. Each student will be allocated a different topic from the list of titles provided - students will hand-in choice forms and where possible a title will be allocated from their list of choices. This module gives students the opportunity to investigate a specific disease topic from the range of titles provided and is designed to allow the students to adopt a self-learning approach in which they will conduct their own research on a defined topic, with the module manager providing overall guidance and support in the form of tutorial sessions. The tutorial sessions provide a forum for addressing problems, for assessing and monitoring progress, and for developing the required skills. Tutorial sessions include topics on information and retrieval, improving essays and discussion of their essay outlines. The module will have two deadlines that students can choose from to enable students to balance their workload based on their other modules over the two semesters.

Aims
To consider how a particular disease may operate; to provide an opportunity to carry out independent research of the literature; to provide training in information retrieval and selection and the preparation of a critical appraisal of a particular topic; to promote the taking of responsibility for their own learning.
