Description for 2020/21

The Masters in Liberal Arts offers the opportunity for students to choose a dissertation or creative project as the culmination of the 4 year degree.
The creative project provides an exciting opportunity for you to demonstrate your advanced knowledge and understanding of the theoretical concepts, creative practices and skills used within Liberal Arts practice by focusing on a specific area of your own choosing that reflects your interest and developing specialism and practice.
You will do this by devising and designing an extended creative project building on knowledge, skills, techniques and practices developed within the programme and through discipline specific modules offered from across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
You will submit an appropriately structured, argued, referenced and illustrated 8000 word critical discursive report that engages with theoretical perspectives, approaches and evidence from within the context of the Liberal Arts as well as the design, creative processes and techniques used in the production of the finished creative output alongside the creative work itself (for example a film, a composition, a piece of creative writing, a photographic portfolio or exhibit, an installation, a sculpture, pottery, a mixed media production, etc.)
You will also present your work at an end of year conference using a variety of visual, written and oral methods to showcase your creative and critical thought processes, methods, skills and techniques to a mixed audience.
You will be supported throughout by a nominated and dedicated supervisor who will provide support, advice, assistance to help you deliver an extended piece of creative work.
In all, this module is an important component of your degree and reflects your advanced level of knowledge and expertise in Liberal Arts theory, methods, critical thinking, problem solving and creative practice skills at Masters level.
It will allow and encourage you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills and show that you can define, design, and execute your own creative project in a chosen area and communicate with a wide audience.
This will show prospective employers that you are a skilled and dedicated independent researcher and practitioner capable of designing, developing and delivering a long term project and can communicate, using a number of means and methods effectively as well as deliver a relevant creative output.
The creative project module may also serve as a good foundation for those who wish to pursue postgraduate research opportunities (PhD).

Aims
To enable students to identify a specific area of creative practice and design and complete a creative project through the production of appropriate associated outputs.
To enable students to demonstrate the ability to understand, evaluate and apply a range of Liberal Arts approaches and practice to an extended independent creative project of their choosing.
To critically engage with relevant debates, approaches perspectives, theory and creative skills within their specific field/area of liberal arts practice.
To develop research, practice and creative skills commensurate with the field/area of Liberal Arts chosen for the project and with the level of study.
To enable students to work independently on a significant piece of work and demonstrate their ability to manage and deliver an extended creative project appropriate to masters level.
To enable students to realise their creative ideas and strengths and demonstrate effective communication when dealing with a range of formats and audiences.
