Description for 2020/21

French 4 is designed to continue French language study for students who have successfully completed module French 3 or equivalent (e.g., GCSE Grade B).
It will enhance skills already acquired, developing knowledge of everyday French in spoken, written, reading and listening activities.
The Units 15 to 20 of the course book "French Experience 1- BBC Publications" refer to the experiences of a group of French speakers in France as they visit, travel, talk about their work and engage in work activities, such as using the telephone and talking to colleagues at work. Discussion is furthered by the introduction of topics currently debated by French people.
As in the preceding course, the targeted exercises and audio material provided are extended by the KLE.
When the course is completed, you can expect to have acquired a denser, more complex understanding of the language, together with the ability to respond with confidence.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will reach level A2 of the Common European Language Framework (CEFR - A2).

This module aims to consolidate written, reading, oral and listening skills in the target language, as well as providing students with an understanding of French life and culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Read short, simple texts and extract information from everyday materials, for example letters, adverts, menus, timetables, brochures, newspapers: 1,2
Speak using more sophisticated phrases to talk about a range of topics, including current issues, social concerns, as well as everyday situations, including speaking on the phone: 1
Understand speech relating to everyday matters,in work or leisure, including telephone messages: 1,2
Recognize and act upon cultural differences encountered in everyday situations and demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the French speaking world: 2
Recognize more complex grammatical structures in French and compare them to the English language: 1,2
Write short, simple notes and messages, for example a personal letter, note of thanks, descriptions: 2

Study hours

20 hours of synchronous and asynchronous class time
100 hours class preparation and revision and private study
22 hours revision for and completion of written exam
8 hours preparation for and attendance at spoken interaction exam

School Rules

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one French language module per semester.
