Through a series of classroom-based workshops and activities, this module will help students to develop specific academic reading, writing, verbal communication and presentation skills. Students receive regular feedback from their tutors in order to help them learn and improve the academic English skills necessary for successful completion of their university studies.
Aims
To improve the academic reading and writing skills necessary for the academic success of identified non-native English speaking students, and to help these students develop an active academic vocabulary.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Portfolio weighted 60%Students will complete a portfolio of written tasksStudents will complete four, 20-minute, in-class tests, based around academic writing skills, produce an essay plan and first and final drafts of an 800-word essay.
2: Oral Test weighted 20%Students take part in an individual interview to demonstrate oral competenceStudents will participate in a 10-minute interview during which they will discuss the background and planning of their process essay.
3: Presentation weighted 20%15-minute presentationStudents will prepare and deliver a 15 minute presentation in small groups (two or three students) based on a theme covered during the class sessions. They will be assessed on the language particular to delivering presentations, presentation organisation, delivery and accuracy of vocabulary.
