This module is designed to develop and deepen students' understanding of how narrative forms, genres and modes are used in creative writing, and to show where their own writing might focus in their current and future practice as writers. By reading and identifying techniques and tropes, the students will translate this into their own creative practice.
Aims
To develop students' understanding of the characteristics of narrative form, genre and mode. To show how the understanding of these characteristics can be employed to control the structures of pieces of creative writing.To provide students with an awareness of the developed traditions of genre and mode through focused 'writerly' readings of literary text.To provide students with an awareness of the traditions and tropes of the literary context of their own writing.To strengthen the students' engagement with creative as well as critical practice and to further explore the relationship between the two.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Review weighted 25%1000 word review of relevant writer or poetA 1000 word review of one or more writers, with focus on their engagement with genre or mode.
2: Portfolio weighted 50%A portfolio of creative writingA collection of original writing in Prose (2500 words); or Poetry (6-9 poems) demonstrating a creative engagement with a particular genre/mode.
3: Commentary weighted 25%A commentary on the portfolioA 1500 word reflective commentary accounting for the creative and critical practices which underly the portfolio work.
