Description for 2020/21

This 15-credit module is compulsory for students on the MChem, Chemistry Single Honours, Major route Chemistry and Major route Medicinal Chemistry programmes; and a programme elective for dual honours Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry students. Students will select a dissertation topic, in an area of interest to the student, and undertake a comprehensive review of the chemical literature and/or database sources before presenting their results in a range of formats including oral presentation, oral examination and a dissertation.

Aims

This module provides students an opportunity to develop their non-experimental research skills and apply and develop their knowledge and understanding of an aspect of chemistry. Students will research a selected topic in chemistry and produce an individual dissertation detailing their findings. This will be supported by an academic supervisor and relevant skills sessions.

1: Bibilography weighted 10%
Progress report 1
A compilation of references, including a brief summary of the papers, identified by the student.

2: Dissertation Plan weighted 10%
Progress report 2
An outline of the proposed dissertation which defines the scope of the dissertation and gives a clear plan for completing the full dissertation.

3: Dissertation weighted 60%
Dissertation
3000 word dissertation building upon the topics/references discussed in the 2 progress reports.

4: Oral Presentation weighted 20%
Presentation
A 25 minute oral presentation, including questions, with the aid of accompanying slides, of the research outlined in the dissertation (assessment 3)
