Description for 2020/21

This 15-credit module is compulsory for students on the MChem, Chemistry Single Honours, Major route Chemistry and Major route Medicinal Chemistry programmes; and a programme elective for dual honours Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry students. Students will carry out an individual project in a themed area in consultation with an academic supervisor and present their results in a variety of formats including a scientific paper, laboratory diary and oral examination.

Aims

This module aims to develop research skills in chemistry, specifically experimental and instrumental skills, development and selection of appropriate research methodologies, data interpretation and analysis and scientific methods of presentation.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Reflective Diary weighted 30%
Contemporaneous project diary
Students complete a project diary that contains their procedures, observations, and analysis throughout their project. This should be completed primarily during the experimental sessions, but also include any analysis worked on in their own time.

2: Paper weighted 40%
Scientific paper in academic journal format
A 2000 word report (or equivalent) written in the style of an appropriate RSC academic journal, including full formatting and experimental details.

3: Oral Exam weighted 30%
30 minute viva
A 30 minute viva conducted by 2 members of staff. The student will be asked to defend their findings presented in their paper (assessment 2), and will also be asked questions on the theory and background of their research project.
