Description for 2020/21

This synoptic module forms part of the Master in Chemistry (MChem) degree programmes, and allows students to revisit key topics introduced at Levels 4, 5 and 6 to develop deeper understanding, and promote the importance of these topics in other areas of chemistry. The module aims to encourage students to draw links between different topics, promoting a holistic approach to the learning of chemistry before they embark on their final year studies.

Aims
to enable students to develop and display a broad understanding of the chemistry course and the links between topics;
to develop synthesis, problem solving and organisational skills.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Intended Learning Outcomes

use core chemical knowledge developed throughout the course to solve synoptic chemistry problems: 1,2
communicate effectively and accurately the concepts and principles of a core area of chemistry: 1
apply fundamental chemical principles to rationalise chemical behaviour through the synthesis of a range of discrete chemical concepts: 1,2

Study hours

Seminars: 24 hours
Oral Exam: 1 hour
Guided Independent study (including preparation for seminars and for presentation/oral exam): 30 hours

Description of Module Assessment

1: Oral Exam weighted 40%
Oral Examination and Presentation
45-minute individual oral examination comprising a 10-15 minute presentation to demonstrate the teaching of a first year chemistry topic, questions on the presentation, and 30-35 minutes of questions on fundamental chemistry topics.

2: Coursework weighted 60%
Open Book Assessment
A mixture of time limited short and long assessment problems employing a range of question styles and answer formats. The student effort is equivalent to that required to prepare for and complete a 3 hour examination.
