Description for 2020/21

This module is designed to provide rigorous training in practical and professional chemistry skills that are necessary for laboratory classes throughout the course. The range of learning activities and assessments are designed to initiate progress towards the development of Keele's Graduate Attributes with emphasis on communication (oral and written), information literacy, professionalism, problem solving and collaborative work.

Aims
To develop essential preparative and analytical laboratory skills
To equip students with the ability to communicate experimental procedures, findings, data and conclusions through appropriate scientific media.
To equip students with experience in data analysis and problem solving.
To develop awareness of safety and sustainability implications in the chemistry laboratory.
To develop team working skills and the ability to recognise the roles necessary for successful team work.
To initiate progress towards the development of Keele¿s Graduate Attributes with a particular emphasis on high standards of record keeping, communication (oral and written), information literacy and presentation.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Practice Based Assessment weighted 60%
Practical-based assessment
Includes pre-laboratory exercises, an in-lab record of COSHH risk assessment, aims, objectives, procedure, results, data analysis and conclusion of each experiment, and in-lab assessment of practical skills.

2: Portfolio weighted 25%
Lab reports
Word-processed lab report sections (semester 1) and a full lab report (semester 2), each focussing on a different practical.

3: Group Project weighted 15%
Group project
A guided-inquiry project comprising an experimental plan and poster presentation. The marks will be moderated by self- and peer-assessment via WebPA taking individual contributions into account.
