British Sign Language (BSL) is used by 150,000 people in the UK, and knowledge of the language is useful in the fields of health care, social work and education. Completion of this module will give students the ability to communicate in everyday situations and provide the basis for further development in BSL.Students studying on our BSL modules may have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification with Signature Level 1 award in British Sign Language.
Aims
This module aims to enhance students' ability to understand and use basic British Sign Language (BSL) and understanding of deaf culture.

Students must have completed MLX-90001, BSL-90001, or have equivalent knowledge. Language Centre approval required for this module.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Portfolio weighted 40%Learner JournalLearner Journal of approximately 800 words including a contrastive analysis
2: Oral Exam weighted 60%Examination in productive and receptive skillsStudents will sign for 4-5 minutes, including questions from the examiner.
