OLDER WOMEN ROCK THE POTTERIES: Poetry (E)motion
18 October - 17 November 2017
Keele University Art Gallery

‘Older Women Rock the Potteries!’ is a ground-breaking project created and run by Leah Thorn, a spoken word poet bringing older women together to produce new voices of ageing through her Visiting Fellowship at Keele University's Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS). Drawing on her previous work with older women designed to raise awareness and explore issues facing women aged 50 and older, using poetry, retro clothes, workshops and conversations. Leah’s work celebrates older women, challenges invisibility, unites across differences and subverts dominant assumptions and prejudices about older women. In collaboration with ILAS and the Keele Centre for Ageing Research, and with funding from Arts Council England, Keele University Art Gallery presents the Older Women Rock collection of ‘poetic clothing’ – clothing embroidered with poetry written by older women. The exhibition will include new poetic clothing and other pieces by such artists as the Cultural Sisters, Dawn Jutton, and Emma Scholin Tipping with the voices of local women.
