Prunus 'Choshu-hizakura'

P. serrulata f. splendens P. Lannesiana Wils cv ‘Chosiuhizakura’

Hizakura is named after the bright scarlet of ancient aristocratic court robes in Japan, a poetic allusion to the bright pink colours of the flowers of this group of cherries. Choshu is an ancient province of SW Honshu now in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

It forms a broom-shaped small tree with inflorescences of 3 to 4 blooms. Deep pink buds open to single deep pink flowers c. 5 cm across in late season. Young leaves are coppery red.
