Research Scientist Apprenticeship

The Research Scientist Apprenticeship at Keele University offers three specialisms in Analytical Science or Biomedical Science and our new specialism launching in September 2024, Specialist Data Processing. The three pathways only differ in the Research and Development module for the specialism chosen. This ensures the programme provides scientific technical knowledge and skills, alongside developing leadership qualities to equip professionals for the challenges of the modern science sector.

Duration: 2 years.

Qualification: MSc Technical Leadership.

Application: We typically require applications 8 weeks before programme starts.

Ofsted: 'Good' Ofsted rating for Apprenticeships at Keele University in Full Inspection, June 2023.

Specialism 1: Specialist Data Processing

Launching in September 2024, this specialism is designed to develop data processing skills in a clinical setting. It will firstly focus on the practical issues, such as efficient working, method development and validation. Then move on to specific themes such as the avoidance of bias or hyperparameter tuning. Participants will need to be in a role and setting where they provide technical support to the provision of medical scanners, this could be MRI, CT or Ultrasound equipment etc.

Specialism 2: Analytical Science

Our analytical science specialism is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The broad purpose of the occupation is primarily involved in planning, leading and conducting experiments and analysing results. This specialism is for technical staff in quality control, research-support positions across the analytical science sector, such as in pharmaceutical, food, forensic or environmental organisations. Participants will need to work in a laboratory setting and provide technical support for various analytical instrumentation in the characterisation of given analytes.

Specialism 3: Biomedical Science

This specialism is for technical staff i.e. an Assistant Scientist who is primarily involved in delivering testing services or experimental studies in the health/forensic sector. Participants will need to be in a position where they work in a laboratory setting and provide diagnostic service to patients, medical staff, researchers and other stakeholders. This could be through using various instrumentation and methods (e.g. in haematology, coagulation, toxicology, microbiology etc).

The apprenticeship programme is suitable for a range of Technicians working in the scientific sector who are looking towards, or are currently working in, an analytical, biomedical or specialist data processing role.

  • The apprenticeship provides participants with the technical and professional skills to plan, lead and conduct scientific experiments.
  • During the programme we will also explore how to analyse scientific results and the impact of this, in the wider strategic context of your organisation and the sector.

The apprenticeship integrates a range of modules applicable to the workplace relating to the three specialisms, including data analysis, research communication and advanced decision making. This is complemented by additional components, such as leadership and management, critical appraisal, professional ethics, and reflective practice.

Examples of indicative modules include.

  • Project and processes.
  • Data analysis.
  • Research communication.
  • Research and development in analytical or biomedical science.
  • Leading teams.
  • Work project.

To complete an apprenticeship, you must be employed in an organisation with your employer's support. We typically require apprentice applications 8 weeks before programme starts and by undertaking an apprenticeship, you commit to completing the End Point Assessment (EPA).

The Research Scientist Apprenticeship typically requires.

  • Hold a degree which justifies the learning of one of the three specialisms, analytical, biomedical or data science. Where applicants can demonstrate substantial and relevant experience, formal qualifications may be waived.
  • 2 years relevant experience in the sector.
  • GCSE Maths and English, Grade C (4) or equivalent.

We will work in partnership with you to ensure you are supported throughout the apprenticeship process.

  • Our Business Engagement Manager will provide tailored support and offer guidance on applying for an apprenticeship at Keele University, direction on eligibility and contracting, or any other questions you may have.
  • This relationship does not stop once you start an apprenticeship at Keele University. We also have dedicated Work-Based Learning Officers to guide you through the apprenticeship when you are studying on one of our programmes.
  • We offer a personalised approach to apprentices, ensuring you have the assistance you need from Keele University as your Training Provider, every step of the way.

Apprenticeships are paid for by employers, not apprentices.

  • Employers with a payroll of more than £3 million can typically use their apprenticeship levy contributions to pay for places on apprenticeship programmes.
  • Any business with a payroll below £3 million is usually eligible for government funding that will cover at least 95% of the cost of an apprenticeship course.

Additional incentives are also available to employers based on differing circumstances.

Research Scientist Case Study

"“The jump from scientist to leader can be intimidating, but the apprenticeship gave me a safe environment to develop both analytical and managerial techniques. It has given me the confidence to be a leader and exposed me to invaluable content and networks to aid my growth as a scientific professional in the sector.”"
