Keele student presented with Chesney award at Midland Region Student Study Day
The beautiful surroundings of Keele Hall provided the venue for the Midlands Region Student Study Day held on Saturday 16th March 2019. This was the first time Keele University has held a Radiography study day since the new programme commenced in 2017. Deborah Richardson, a second-year radiography student, took the lead in organising a varied and interesting programme.
Open to all levels of radiographers from student radiographers to more advanced practitioners, the day featured speakers Peter Sutton (Advanced Practitioner Radiographer at University Hospitals of North Midlands), Dr Desiree O’Leary (Radiography Diagnostic Imaging programme lead), Dr Ingrid Britton (Consultant Radiology at the University Hospitals of North Midlands) and Burgess Diagnostics (Veterinary Private Practice Imaging Service). Topics covered included ‘Journey to Advanced Practice’, ‘Infection control in A&E’, ‘Imaging Innovation in Colorectal Cancer’ and ‘The role of the radiographer in MRI and CT Imaging of all creatures great and small’. Delegates also had an opportunity to visit the new state of the art Radiography Suite on campus,
During the day Steven Moorhouse, representative for the Midland Region Branch of the SoR, presented the first “Chesney Award for Radiography Students” to Deborah Richardson in recognition of the compassion and care she showed to a patient whilst on her nursing placement. Deborah, took time to understand the predicament of a spinal injury patient with life-changing consequences by introducing him to the use of a Kindle whilst in hospital. For the patient, this improved the experience of hospital and had a positive impact on his mental health. She is now working with Bristol Trust on research to prove the benefits that this can bring to a demographic who had not previously engaged with this type of technology.
The speakers inspired all 40+ delegates who attended this study day, whether they were student radiographers or more advanced practitioners in radiography.
