Togo Igawa

Togo Igawa is a distinguished Japanese actor who has built an extraordinary career in British theatre, film, and television. After training at the Haiyuza Theatre Company Acting School and Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music, he began his stage career in Japan. He is one of the founder members of the Black Tent Theatre and toured with the tent over 120 cities in Japan for 15 years. 

In 1983, Togo moved to England, and in 1986 he became the first Japanese actor to join the Royal Shakespeare Company during the opening season of the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Since then, he has performed widely on stage and screen, earning international recognition for his versatility and talent. 

Togo’s film credits include Le Hérisson (The Hedgehog), Menú Gustatió (Tasting Menu), ס יפור גדו ל (A Matter of Size), Eyes Wide Shut, Topsy Turvy, Tetris, 47 Ronin, Johnny English Reborn, The Last Samurai. He has also appeared in popular television series such as The IT Crowd, The Crown, Doctor Who, Invasion, Torchwood and Giri/Haji. His voice work includes roles in Thomas & Friends as Hiro, and video games such as Total War: Shogun 2, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. 

This lecture is part of the Prof Fumiko Yonezawa Memorial Lecture Series, being organised in commemoration of Prof Fumiko Yonezawa, who was the first Japanese student studied at Keele from 1963 to 1964, and later achieved significant accomplishments as a theoretical physicist and became the first female president of the Physical Society of Japan and a laureate of the L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science for her pioneering theory and computer simulations on amorphous semiconductors and liquid metals in 2005.
