Keele Hall - Heritage Open Day 2023

Keele University is excited to take part in the annual 'Heritage Open Days'.  We will be opening our doors on Sunday 17 September 2023.

Heritage Open Days
Welcome to England’s largest festival of history and culture!

Every September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.  Read more about Heritage Open Days.

Keele Hall
The Keele estate was owned by the Sneyd family and the first Keele Hall was built in 1580 and rebuilt to Anthony Salvin’s design in 1855-1860. In 1949 the University College of North Staffordshire was founded on the site, and became Keele University in 1962. The campus has over 600 acres of landscaped grounds, farmland, woodland and University buildings and facilities.

There will be guided tours of the Hall. The Raven Mason Collection based in Keele Hall will be open for visitors to view an exhibition of Mason’s Ironstone China and Porcelain. There are leaflets for self-guided heritage walks around the campus and arboretum. Families and children may enjoy the woodland walks; the tours and Raven Mason will be of historical interest and some older children may find them interesting. There will also be lawn games outside the hall (weather permitting).

There will be scheduled guided tours of the Hall in groups of up to 30 people, no need to book just turn up and we will allocate you a space on the next available session. The tours will last approx. 40mins at the following times:

Alternatively you are welcome to take our virtual heritage tour here or take a self-guided walking tour using our Heritage Trail Guide

Light refreshments will be available at Keele Hall during the day (tea, coffee and snacks), you are more than welcome to bring a picnic to take in the wonderful grounds or if in need of something more substantial visit the KPA Clubhouse which is just a minute walk from the Hall and opens at 12pm for food including Sunday lunch.

Whilst in the area...
There are lots of heritage sites open nearby on 11 September, as part of the Heritage Open Days programme, including Chatterly Whitfield Colliery, Ford Green Hall and guided walks of James Brindley's canals so why not make a day of it
