ALJA is a two-piece (guitar/drum-kit) improvisation-based project which freely draws upon and fuses styles including (but not limited to) jazz, blues, rock, and the experimental.
The members include: James Shufflebotham (guitar), a PhD student who is researching and developing a theory for gravitation in music; and Alex Aylward (drum kit), a Master of Arts graduate in Creative Music Technology.

Their repertoire consists of original arrangements which, not only feature extensive improvisation, but are seamlessly and playfully linked by it.
