Hawthorns Hall Council

Hall Council represents everyone who lives in Hawthorns to the university and works to improve the social life within the halls.  The Hall Council organises social activities, gets student residents involved in the life of the university, and works alongside Resident Tutors and staff to improve the running of halls.

Any resident of a hall can be elected to these positions

Who is the Hall Council?

The elected roles are:

  • Chair                                    
  • Deputy Chair    
  • Treasurer                           
  • Secretary                            
  • Social Secretary               
  • Publicity Officer              

Chair

The Hall Chair is the representative of the Council and Hall and is responsible for hall business and functions.

  • Act as Chair for Council meetings.
  • Represent the Council on any relevant university committee(s) or committee of the Students’ Union, especially the Student Representatives Council (SRC).
  • Sit on the Student Liaison Committee, a sub-committee of Senate chaired by the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Students. 
  • Opportunity to sit on Safety on Campus sub-committee.
  • Have the right to sit on any sub-committee of the Hall Council.
  • Call meetings (and extraordinary meetings) of the Council in accordance with the Constitution.

Deputy Chair

  • Assists the chair with the business of the council and acts in their absence

Treasurer

  • Draw up and publish accounts for any function sponsored by the Hall
  • Draw up and publish Hall Council accounts each term for the first Hall Council of the following term
  • Draw up and publish annual Hall accounts for the year ending 1st April
  • Undertake tasks delegated by the Hall Council, e.g. lead on fundraising
  • Attend all Hall Councils and sit on all sub-committees

 Secretary

  • Responsible for taking minutes of meetings of the Hall Council and its sub-committees
  • Present draft minutes to the Chair for verification as soon as possible after meetings
  • Distribute copies of the minutes to members of Hall Council and others
  • Ensure that relevant persons are notified in advance of Hall Council meetings (Resident Tutors, Student Support staff, KUSU VP Education and Welfare)

Social Secretary

  • Responsible for leading social activities in the Hall
  • Assist the Chair on development of the Common Room within the Hall
  • Act as principal liaison between the Bar and Hall Council
  • Convene meetings of the Social Committee

Publicity Officer

  • Responsible for publicising social activities and other Hall Council events
  • Maintain the Hall Council website

If you are interested in becoming the Publicity Officer contact the Hall Chair

Block Representatives

  • Act as official representative of the block and as such, put the view of that block before the Hall Council
  • Receive and forward complaints and suggestions which concern academic and social welfare of block residents to Hall Council
  • Distribute information from Hall Council to block residents
