Past Programmes
The Keele International Study Abroad office together with certain Schools organises short-term programmes for Keele students. These are often heavily subsidized through funding from the European Union or the British Council.
Keele students from a range of disciplines have been taking part in Summer Schools across the world.
Law Masters' Programme - Mumbai, India
A group of seven Law Masters students will be spending a month in India, following in the footsteps of last year's group, who were in Mumbai when the terrorists struck.
They will be studying at the TATA Institute of Social Science in northern Mumbai and at the rural campus in Tuljapur. As they are either studying for the MA in Gender, Sexuality & Human Rights or Human Rights, Globalisation & Justice their programme involves a range of interesting topics: Impact of policies of International bodies like WTO, World Bank, IMF, TRIPS on Indian Economy; Women movement in India and labour rights in rural context and Indigeneous people's rights (Schedule V land issues, Displacement and Resettlement) among others. They will be visiting a variety of NGOs to learn first hand about these issues.
The UK students taking part have been part-funded by the Prime Minister Initiative 2 (PMI2), which is a government programme managed by the British Council. Keele has also received funding for another PMI2 Programme for students in Life Sciences specialising in Parasitology to spend 3 months in Malaysia in the summer.
Summer School in Malaysia
An MSc student, on Molecular Parasitology and Vector Biology, undertook a research project at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2010. Here, the student spent three months working with staff in the vector control research unit, integrating with a diverse mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures. The student said that his"decision to apply for this study abroad placement resulted in one of the best decisions of my life"
Again this programme was part-funded by the Prime Minister Initiative 2 (PMI2)
Short Programme at Ball State University
12 very adventurous first year Criminology students spent a week at Ball State University (BSU) in Muncie, Indiana. The students were accompanied by Dr Annette Kratz, Head of Keele International, who took the opportunity to also visit Keele's other partner university in the area: Bowling Green University (BGSU) in Ohio. This was the return exchange visit to the incoming visit from 14 BSU students in March. BSU and BGSU were Keele's first exchange partners in 1992. Keele students at BSU The students spent a packed week attending lectures on aspects of the legal and crime prevention system in the USA interspersed with practical activities involving ride-alongs with the local police; K9 demonstrations; watching a trial from the selection of the jury (which took 2.5 hours) to the judgment; job shadowing of probation officers and community correction officers; a tour of Pendleton Correctional Facility, a high-security prison, finishing with a visit to the local mall. Professors Michael Brown and Taiping Ho from the BSU faculty accompanied the group throughout and could not have done more for the group and the students wish to thank them for a field trip of a lifetime. "It is something I will never forget" was the statement which sums it up best by one of the students.
Short Programme in Seoul
8 undergraduate students studying Media, Communication and Culture or English at Keele went to South Korea at Dongguk University in Seoul, where they are taking courses in Buddhism, Korean Film and making a short film as part of the Short Film Production Workshop. They have stayed in a Temple retreat and visited the demilitarised zone as part of an Eco-Wetlands tour. They were accompanied by Dr Nick Bentley, Programme Director for MCC and provided with briefings by Keele International staff and South Korean students studying at Keele. Both these summer programmes were supported by funding from the PMI2 initiative to encourage British students to be more aware of what other countries have to offer.
Short Programme in Singapore
6 undergraduate Music and Music Technology students have just returned from Singapore where they followed courses in MIDI, Recording & Mixing and an Asian Music Workshop (Malay Kompang) together with local students. They also visited the Asian Civilization Museum and the Peranakan Museum. Their stay ended their stay with them producing a performance for staff and students, which was well received.
Summer School in Grenoble
30 Australian and EU Criminology students from Maribor, Slovenia, Grenoble, France and Keele gathered at the Institut des Etudes Politiques (IEP) in Grenoble to learn about “Security: local, global and supranational”. They followed lectures on topics such as "Security and trafficking in human beings: global policies or international political game?", "National and local security policies: a comparison between France and Italy" and "The growth and character of transnational and international policing", given by staff from Keele, Griffith, Flinders, Maribor and the IEP. Visits to the French School of Police Executives and to the Forensic Crime Laboratory in Lyon were organised for the group. The students finished the summer school by giving individual or group presentations on topics such as: “International and transnational justice and policing” and “Migrations and crime”. Evaluation was undertaken by Keele Professors Anne Worrall and Susanne Karstedt. The students had all spent a semester studying abroad –with Australians studying in the EU and EU students studying at one of four Australian partners. This was the last year of funding from the EU and the Australian government for this project, but Keele will continue to work with three of the Australian partners, and 7 students have already been nominated for Spring 2010.
