Who is eligible?

Any student taking a degree course at Keele involving a Life Sciences subject (i.e. Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, Human Biology) is eligible to apply to spend up to 48 weeks on a work placement, Such a placement will increase your initial employment prospects by giving you appropriate employment, laboratory and research skills. In addition, the work carried out whilst on placement is written up and incorporated into your final year assessment.

Language Training

If you plan to do this you should ideally sign up for a language course as part of your first or second year. For international placements for example in the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Ireland and Poland possible arrangements can be made.

Alternatively here is a list of possible Language Schools available whilst you are out on your placement.

What shall I do next?

In the first instance you should discuss with Prof David Hoole which placement would suit you. A meeting will then be organised with all second year students in Life Sciences to discuss the procedures involved and the application process. A preliminarily meeting will occur in the first semester of the second year with a follow up meeting giving further details at the begiining of the second semester. The application procedure will be clarified and your attention is drawn to the application form in the 'Forms' section on this website.

The current deadline for students interested in the Undergraduate Programme is 24 February 2013.

All Application forms should be handed into the Reception in the Huxley Building, Life Sciences and emailed to Prof D Hoole.

Once selected you attend meetings with Prof Hoole and Lisa Stoker about practical matters - insurance, health & safety, travel arrangements, accommodation etc. Funding is available to support those working in European countries. Grants are paid as a flat rate and calculated on a monthly rate. (currently approx €370 per month); as a first instalment this is to cover living costs, travel and insurance.
