Name: Jenn Richards
Areas of Responsibility:
Hey guys, how are you going? My name is Jenn and that was a typical Aussie greeting which at first confused me, but now I use it with pride! It was just one of the many intriguing colloquialisms I was given the opportunity to discover at my partner university Deakin, located near Melbourne, Victoria. I think in the world today we assume that other English speaking countries are very similar to us, but I have learnt that Australian culture is much more removed from English ways than I was expecting! There was so much to discover: from language comparisons to differences in general behaviour, there was nothing quite so fun as highlighting our individual quirks in good spirits with my new friends. Their enthusiastically returned interest in my life at Keele taught me a lot of things about my own personality as well as the people of Australia, and so my Study Abroad experience was not just an experience, but a whole journey. Not just to the other side of the world, but to new sides of myself. There are many reasons why someone would opt to go on Study Abroad, and there are different emphasises on those reasons for everyone. Whatever your own, you will fulfil your expectations and without a doubt exceed them, whether that be the educational advancement, the memories of extreme sports or sight-seeing, the life friends or something else just as incredible. Life is your own adventure, so make it count.

Name: Matthew Walker
Areas of Responsibility:
Hello, my name is Matthew and I had the pleasure of spending a semester abroad at the University of Bergen, Norway, as part of my Keele studies. I have no doubt in saying that you will not come across any other university experience as rewarding as the Study Abroad programme.
It gave me the opportunity to spend 5 months living in one of the most breathtaking countries, to choose modules that developed an academic understanding in areas which are not covered at Keele, and to meet amazing people from all walks of life. Before leaving Norway, I travelled to the country's Northern regions where I had the opportunity to ski and to experience snowshoeing for the first time, whilst admiring the spectacular scenery. I was also lucky enough to see the wonder that is the Northern Lights! Before returning home, I embarked on a whistle stop tour of Europe, taking in sights from Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden.
I hope that my experience of Study Abroad has inspired you to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. It is natural that you may have many questions at this stage, and it is my aim as a Peer Advisor to answer these to the best of my ability. Please feel free to drop by at the Walter Moberly Building if you have any questions, or simply wish to know more about Study Abroad.

Name: Gurpeet Kalm
Areas of Responsibility:
Hi! I’m Gurpreet and I studied abroad at San Diego State University! Studying abroad was by far the best decision I have ever made and I encourage anyone thinking of doing it to go for it! I had an unforgettable time in San Diego, I experienced things I would never normally be able to; it was great waking up to the sunshine and knowing that I could randomly decide to spend the day at the beach. J I travelled and saw places I probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Studying abroad is a chance to immerse yourself in another culture. I don’t think I will forget celebrating Thanksgiving or my first football game; the atmosphere was incredible. The best part of studying abroad is the amazing people you meet. It was a lovely experience to meet people from all over the world and I feel better for it. I now have friends from different parts of the world, which has stirred my desire to travel and see places I never thought to before. For me studying abroad was a life-changing experience, in which my independence and confidence have grown dramatically. If you are considering studying abroad, it’s an incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so definitely do it! If you have any questions or would like advice about studying abroad, I will be more than happy to help. :-)

Name: Nick Parry
Areas of Responsibility:
Hello everybody! My name is Nick and I spent a year studying in Gothenburg Sweden. My experience abroad was fantastic. From the beauty of the northern lights and the tundra to the city streets and lifestyle of the Scandinavian cities there was so much on offer. I had the chance to travel all over Europe and met a strong group of friends from every corner of the globe! But the best part for me is that it is not yet over! Now I can spend another year as part of the study abroad process and start helping you and your fellow students plan your adventures! With the sheer number of partners to choose from as well the vast amount of opportunities they each offer there is no one I wouldn’t recommend it to and with the amount of support you receive as a Keele Student there is no reason not to! You will have an amazing time and I can’t wait to see you all in the Study Abroad Office!

Areas of Responsibility:
Hey, I’m Ariana! I went to Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Never in a million years did I think I would not only travel so far away from home, but actually live there! Being located in the ‘burbs of HK meant that I got to experience the true local Hong Kong culture with the international, metropolitan centre that everyone knows so well a short MTR ride away. My professors came from all over the world and clearly loved the subjects they were teaching. I got to take classes I could never do at Keele; 3 out of 4 were all about Asia! What was even cooler was that I when I went travelling [oh, did I ever!] I got to actually see the history and politics of what I had been studying. I learned more about the pace of Hanoi than any book could ever tell me, spent a night on a boat in Halong Bay, rode motorbikes in Sapa, climbed the Great Wall in the snow, saw the Terracotta Warriors and survived the Beijing Subway. I celebrated 62 years of the People’s Republic of China with a fireworks display over the Hong Kong skyline, visited Hong Kong’s Big Buddha [which is over 100 feet tall!] and learned about the local holidays and customs by taking part in them. I knew I’d never regret studying abroad, but I didn’t expect to love it as must as I did. I can’t wait to continue the experience by helping others study abroad as well!

Hi, my name is Josephine and I studied at York University which is on the outskirts of Toronto in Canada. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I learnt a lot both inside the lecture rooms and outside. Being based where I was I had the opportunity to do some travelling in the U.S. too and this was definitely a highlight. The thing that really made the experience for me was the people I met along the way and that is also the thing I am most excited about in my role as a peer advisor. Getting to meet all of you and find out about your journeys.

Name: Greg Sheen
Areas of Responsibility:
Hi everyone! My name is Greg, and I spent my time studying abroad at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Before I even say anything further, I have to tell anyone who will listen to take the chance to study abroad – it really is the most fantastic opportunity you get at university. There were so many weekends on which groups of internationals undertook road trips to Atlanta, Florida, and even 5 days in New York city! The university itself, as with all US universities, works very differently to Keele – I got better grades there! – but that only adds to the entire experience, alongside gettingto know ‘Greek life’ on campus, and the great nightlife. If you have questions about UNCG, North Carolina, or anything study abroad, feel free to ask. However clichéd it may be, my study abroad really did change me, and I challenge you, to do the same!

Name: Lexie Nixon
Areas of Responsibility:
HI everyone! My names Lexie, and I studied abroad at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Study abroad is without a doubt the best experience I’ve ever had. Study abroad gave me the opportunity to do so many things I didn’t even know I wanted to; I got to go to an ice hockey match, experience a proper Canadian thanks giving, as well meet so many amazing people from all over the world that I still keep in touch with. Being able to travel as well as get to study in a completely different academic system was a really good, and I found I benefitted a lot from the different courses offered and the style of teaching. It really is a once in a life time opportunity, and I can’t stress enough how amazing it is to be able to do it. It seemed like a daunting task at first, and I couldn’t imagine going off to another country and living entirely on my own for four months, but it wasn’t anywhere near as scary as I thought it would be and I’m a much better person for it. So if you’re thinking of studying abroad don’t be put off by the challenge, and the Peer Advisors are here to help you with any questions you have. I ‘m looking forward to meeting you all!
