Summary:
T.A.C.T. is a modern jazz group formed at Keele University by four undergraduates who live for music. Sets comprise of several jazz standards and classics and mix in some popular songs with a jazz ‘tint’ on top - we make sure there’s something for everyone. Our influences consist of earlier jazz musicians such as Buddy Rich, Sonny Rollins and Duke Ellington up to latter-day Jazz musicians such as Billy Cobham, Chick Corea and Mike Stern.
About us:
We are all third year music students at Keele University. We formed after Charlie (piano) met Alex (drums) in a music performance course in the first year of university. Shortly after, Tracey (saxophone) and Ted (guitar) joined. We all shared the same passion for music and all enjoyed playing jazz, therein T.A.C.T. was born. Made up as an acronym of our names it also has musical connotations as ‘tact’ is Russian for bar-line.
About the business:
As well as being a band, T.A.C.T. is run as a business. We have performed at events around North Staffordshire including the FineST awards evening, the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust Beer Festival and the British Ceramics Confederation annual dinner evening. We also perform regularly around campus.
How Student Enterprise has helped us:
With help from the scheme, we have received business training and business start-up advice. This has helped us to become a much more professional act. The funding that we have received has enabled us to purchase the required equipment and insurance to allow us to develop our business further to a more professional level.
Future plans:
Our main aim at the moment is to try to increase the number of events we are performing at, particularly weddings and university graduations. We enjoy what we do and look forward to developing T.A.C.T. into a sustainable business.
