Learning and Teaching Strategic Aims

STRATEGIC AIM 1: To develop the Keele Distinctive Curriculum (KDC) that enables our graduates to demonstrate:

a) Essential, specialist and expert knowledge in their chosen discipline or disciplines;
b) A broad outlook and an independent approach that prepares them for the diverse range of roles they will play in our increasingly complex society.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:

  • To develop students’ self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and ability to contribute effectively in a contemporary world by exploring diverse approaches and perspectives to learning within specific disciplinary contexts.
  • To use exemplars and demonstration projects from a range of disciplines to extend best practice in promoting and evaluating the development of graduate attributes.
  • To develop further a suite of activities and experiences - the Co-curriculum - to complement and support students' academic studies.

STRATEGIC AIM 2: To establish assessment and feedback processes that enhance and deepen learning.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide varied opportunities for students to be assessed on their own work and work done with others.
  • To ensure that students fully understand the assessment criteria, processes and feedback channels that support their learning.
  • To embed innovative practices for enhanced feedback mechanisms and approaches.
  • To further develop and embed discipline and task-specific assessment criteria within an overarching institutional framework.
  • To develop threshold standards for assessment and feedback.

STRATEGIC AIM 3:To promote research-informed education and evidence-based practice that supports an increasingly diverse student body.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:

  • To develop further students’ abilities to evaluate critically the making/remaking of knowledge in their discipline(s).
  • To promote international, sustainability and interdisciplinary perspectives in every student's programme of study.
  • To ensure that all students are able to develop research skills, use them within their studies and articulate the relevance and utility of those skills.
  • To develop the understanding of different disciplinary and professional pedagogies to inform the curriculum, student development and the use of learning spaces.

STRATEGIC AIM 4: To sustain and extend approaches to learning that further enhance the employability of Keele graduates and the career destinations they are able to reach.

  • To promote and support pilot projects that provide programmes with more opportunities to provide some form of work-related learning.
  • To reflect on employer perspectives in developing new curricula and programmes.
  • To extend information provision to provide further insights into sector-specific graduate destinations.
  • To look across the sector at good practice in supporting employability skills and experience developments to further develop the e Keele Distinctive Curriculum (KDC)

STRATEGIC AIM 5: To use technology and the campus environment to further enhance the student learning experience and teaching effectiveness within the context of a larger and more diverse student population.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:

  • To promote partnership working with the library and other information providers to encourage information literacy.
  • To evaluate space use and needs to ensure that future developments are consistent with a range of disciplinary teaching and learning styles.
  • To review approaches to e-learning in order to develop the online learning environment in a way that meets the needs of discipline teaching and students with different learning styles.

STRATEGIC AIM 6: To work as a learning community to promote innovation and the highest quality standards in learning, teaching, assessment and educational practice.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:

  • To agree and enact a charter that embodies the values and expectations we share as a community of learners and promote the highest quality standards in professional learning, teaching, assessment and educational practice.
  • To extend student engagement in the design, delivery and review of the curriculum and teaching and learning experiences , for example, by developing the role of StARS in partnership with KUSU and the KPA,  and employing more of our graduates to work with students, KUSU and the KPA to broaden the co-curriculum.
  • To ensure that the information that underpins decision-making and the continuous improvement of educational provision is current, accurate and useful to the relevant stakeholders, including students and employers.
  • To reflect the needs and aspirations of the University in the professional development of new and experienced staff in teaching and learning and in the operation of our reward and recognition systems.
