Matthew was educated at the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham, and, after a period working at Glasgow University, has been teaching at Keele since 1994. His past research was in contemporary Russian politics and he is the author of, among others, Public Opinion in Postcommunist Russia (Macmillan, 1997) and Contemporary Russia (with Edwin Bacon, 2006). Matthew's current work is in learning and teaching in politics and citizenship education.
He is currently working with colleagues from Southampton and Liverpool John Moores Universities on a project on 'Teaching Citizenship in Higher Education' and is being funded by the politics subject centre of the Higher Education Academy to develop resources to support teaching the practice of politics.
