He was educated at the University of Essex, the L.S.E, and Strathclyde University. His main research interests are in US electoral behaviour, the presidency, comparative legislative behaviour, and he is currently working on a study of presidential elections. He is co-author of American Politics Today and has published in the British Journal of Political Science and Politics Today.
He served as a Member of the European Parliament for Staffordshire West and Congleton between 1994 and 1999.
