Keele Environment Model United Nations (KEMUN) 2013
Having spent a long time preparing for Keele’s Environment Model United Nations conference, the weekend (1 – 3 February 2013) came around very quickly. We simulated the Security Council facing the problem of China building dams along the River of Mekong, this was problematic for other countries in the far East as it was limiting their water supply. As the weekend progressed the situation became critical and ‘crisis’ elements were added which encouraged a faster pace of debate.
KEMUN 2013 saw delegates come from the University of York, the Royal Agricultural College, King’s College London, Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, as well as bringing together Keele Model United Nations members and other Keele students with an interest in environmental matters. Although starting off small, there is plenty of room for KEMUN to grow and flourish over the coming years.
The delegates that participated viewed the conference as very successful as a simulation of a diplomatic forum, which contributed to their personal development of skill sets that included public speaking, academic research skills, and their general knowledge base. The nature of the KEMUN conference exposed the delegates to a variety of cultures and international opinions that further increased their understanding of the world, thus culminating in their emergence as global citizens; hence not only boosting their transferable skills, but also enhancing their future employability.
Further to this, KEMUN offered a great social atmosphere, with a wine reception in Keele Hall, a delegate meal and a social with a more relaxing intent on Saturday evening. These events provided delegates with the opportunity to relax and get to know one another, as well as an understanding of their country’s positions and the country representatives they would be able to work well with in order to produce possible resolutions to the Security Council.
Overall, KEMUN 2013 was a great experience for both delegates and the organising committee. And we look forward to next year’s conference!
Grace Taylor, Secretary General of KEMUN 2013
