Keele WORLD AFFAIRS Recognises Chairman's 30 Year Contribution
The 400 members of the Keele World Affairs adult education programme brought their 30th anniversary series to an end on Thursday 31 March 2011, with a surprise presentation to 90-year-old Chairman Owen Powell MBE.
The longest serving member of the group, 96 year old Jack Hood presented a reportage-style photo album with all the highlights of the 24-lecture series together with a cheque for him to donate to his favourite charity. Please also see here.
World Affairs operates under the auspices of the School of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy [SPIRE] at Keele University, is now the largest Adult Education forum in Europe with 430 members. Most of them regularly attend its Thursday 7:30pm meetings during the university terms. The final lecture of this year’s series given by Prof David Dunn of Keele University entitled “Redefining Politics”. This was a radical, caustic, and at times searing examination of the international political system, highlighting its lack of direction towards a better experience for the majority of humanity, and the relative failure of nation states including the West democracies. A forceful message that led to a Q & A debate with members that reached its typical high Keele standard.
An ambitious 2011/12 programme of 24 lectures starting 29th September 2011, was also outlined and will include high profile names such as Lord Wilson [former Secretary to the Cabinet], Lord Goldsmith, the Turkish Ambassador to the UK, Lord Hennessey, one of the country’s leading contemporary historians, and Lord Rees, the renowned scientist and cosmologist and Astronomer Royal.
