SPIRE staff play leading role in European conference
The Keele Forum for Philosophical Research (part of the Research Centre for SPIRE, in the Research Institute for Social Sciences) was well represented at the Joint Sessions of the European Consortium of Political Research, which took place recently at the University of St Gallen in Switzerland (April ,2011). The Joint Sessions of Workshops have taken place since 1973 annually around Europe, and have been recognised as one of the main highlights of the world's political science calendar.

| Dr Sorin Baiasu | Professor Glen Newey |
Dr Sorin Baiasu co-organised (with Dr Sylvie Loriaux – Radboud University, Nijmegen) a five-day workshop entitled 'Sincerity in Ethics, Politics and International Relations)'. Dr Baiasu and Professor Glen Newey presented papers to this workshop together with participants from the US, Australia, Israel, Portugal, Denmark, Romania, Italy, Belgium, the UK, Hungary, Germany and France. The workshop attracted wide interest, so much so that the ECPR Press has since suggested publishing two volumes with the papers presented.
Dr Esther Abin, a former Keele PhD student, presented a paper on 'Ethics and the Time of Politics: For a Temporal Evaluation of Ethical Norms in Politics".
An ECPR research session on the theme of sincerity is also planned for 2012 with the support of the ECPR Kantian Political Thought Standing Group (convened by Dr Sorin Baiasu).
