SPIRE dual honours Politics student Stephen Bennett was successful in having his article 'Choosing an election system is worth a vote' published in the Congleton Chronicle on14 April 2011.  Prior to the referendum on AV that took place on local election day (5th May 2011), The Chronicle asked our students for a review of the proposed changes to the UK's current voting system.

Stephen explained that, in contrast to the first-past-the-post system, where voters pick their favoured candidate, the proposed alternative vote (AV) system would mean that voters rank candidates in order of preference.  National referendums are somewhat of a novelty in Britain, so the opportunity for the electorate to have a direct effect on policy in between elections is not something experienced very often in this country. The larger the percentage of the electorate that votes, the more meaningful the result will be.
