Paula Hughes in the UK's first overnight walking marathon
Paula Hughes
Paula Hughes, from SPIRE, took part in the UK's first overnight walking marathon (26 miles) for the SHINE 2010 event in Manchester last weekend for Cancer Research.
Joining 7,500 other people, Paula set a target time of 8 hours and finished just outside that at 8hr.30mins.42sec. Her target was to raise £300 but with the support from family, friends and colleagues throughout Keele she has raised nearly £450. Paula is pictured right with friend Julia Kennerley.
Both are still accepting donations.

The School of SPIRE would like to note congratulations to our undergraduate students who actively participated and stood for varying political parties in the 2010 Newcastle Borough Council Election - H Gascoigne (Yr3); M Inwood (Yr2); D Jellyman (Yr1); L Proctor (Yr3); R Wallace (Yr2). Plus to send special congratulations to one of our recent graduates, C Snell, who was elected for the Knutton and Silverdale Ward. Full details available here.
LOCALISM AND QUALITY OF PLACE
Dr Philip Catney (Keele European Parties Research Unit) gave a guest lecture to the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (the government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space) on localism strategies and how these connect with promoting high quality places. With the language of localism being used by all three main political parties in the general election, Dr Catney's presentation outlined alternative models of decentralisation and localism, analysing the opportunities and limitations of each of these, concluding with an assessment of the prospects for localism in the next few years.
