asking: why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance?

Procession of the OAR !!
In keeping with the traditions made up by our predecessors,
this year the KPA decided to bring back in fashion a custom that has been apart
of the KPA's humble life since the early 1990's.
At 5pm our newly elected committee, dusted off the impressive artefact that
sits above all, mounted to the wall of our beloved clubhouse; The KPA Oar.
After a few minor complications (how to get out the door), we set off on our,
longer than expected, tour of Keele Campus. Paparazzi on hand we made our way
to the Sneyd Arms where we passed
both the old and the new through the local establishments door frame, and cheered
in a new year, where fun shall reign and hard work be fruitful…x
On our Merry Way...

Where for art thou KRA?
Many Thanks to all involved, to Ian for all the great photo's and to Kate and Ami for the Moral Support and pointed fingers!! x
It’s my
uni and I’ll park where I want to…
After
speaking to David Gray, Marilyn Andrews and too many
bloody post grads! I am happy to announce that, drum roll please……
As of this September, all Postgraduate Research
Students are entitled to buy a staff
permit and park it the designated Staff parking areas. Bravo.
All Postgraduate Taught Students will have to buy students permits and
are confined
to the dreaded student’s car parks. Rage. Nothing I can really do about
this
guys. Apologies.
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE
Ballot box is open for you In the
clubhouse today from
11-5pm
Get your vote on!!
LEGIBLE FEEDBACK... !!!
This month the University Learning and
Teaching Committee responded
ridiculously positive to a proposal made by the KPA. It’s members
decided that
it was in the students interests to implement a policy that feedback
(where
possible) would be typed and not handwritten. This will have to be an
incremental process with the view of becoming policy as of 2010!!!!
See, Keele Loves You!!!
Focus Group
Your esteemed Chair, aka 'The lovely Lyndsey', has been asked to attend
a Focus
Group to give feedback on the student experience here at Keele
for
Postgraduates. This has been organised by the and very beautiful new
pro-vice
chancellor Marilyn Andrews. Marilyn is a progressive thinker who has
helped the
KPA on a number of issues. She's working really hard to make Keele the
kind of
university where its students feel valued and respected.
I've noticed, since submerging myself in the politics of Keele guys
that there
are many many people who want to know the problems, so that they can
fix it. I
can think of a few things, and I’m sure you can too. It would help us
to define
those issues if you please tell me what's wrong or right with Keele.
Things are moving, the energy is changing in the university. Let's keep
the ball rolling...

New
Sandwiches...
The
KPA Doorstop - Missing in action!!!
It was decided by the management and the current Committee to Jazz up the Lunch
time Menu for the Clubhouse. We have had constructive feedback from everyone
... We discovered how passionate people were about the Doorstop sandwiches with
the setting up of S.O.S 'Save our Sandwich' on
Face book (check it out - over 400 people joined! and some say the students
here are apathetic)! Ha!
So... Because the feedback was so positive about the new sandwiches, and
because there is such a strong demand for the old ones - We are merging the two
to have a Frankenstein Menu -
The Re-launch of the KPA's Doorstop Sandwich
to take place !!!!!
(If you would like to help us with the party arrangements or you just want to
get involved on the day email me kpachair@keele.ac.uk)

VITAE Regional PhD Poster Competition 2009
Twas
a rainy Tuesday morn, when eight sleepy eyed Keelites, climbed into the
back of a rented people carrier. Judges and contestants, with their
posters in hand, looked down the soggy motorway towards their
destination - Nottingham university.
A day of learning, of
sharing and listening, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the
effort that was made by our own contestants...
A massive congratulations to :
Hannagh Moore
Ryad Soobhany
John Butcher
Julie Melville and
Elizabeth Maddock
who
got into the final of the VITAE Regional PhD Poster Competition and who
all worked hard on the day representing themselves and Keele. So hard
in fact, they couldn’t manage to stay awake for the lovely drive home,
when (much to our horror!!) we were bequeathed with a tour of
Nottingham by our very own Professor Sian Maslin-Prothero!! A special
thanks to Sian and Mairi Macleod, who took time out of their busy
schedules to not only share the burden of the dreaded hand brake, but
judge the posters on the day.
___________________________ An Introduction...
Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Good
Night....
My name is Lyndsey O'Connell. As of Wednesday the 1st of July, I
will be the chair of Keele's Postgraduate Association. THIS IS VERY EXCITING. I
am excited. I get the feeling you are too!
Too many plans for this year - and even more ideas. We'd love to hear from you.
THIS IS YOUR CLUBHOUSE AND YOUR ASSOCIATION. Please send us an email if you've
come up with a brilliant idea, complaint or comment, or even if you borrowed
it!
This year the theme will be FUN. FUN. Dare I say it. FUN! So leave your worries
at the door and come enjoy Postgraduate life at our clubhouse over a cool
refreshing beverage, or get that overworked Jaw around one of our infamous
sandwiches.
If you're a postgraduate student- Congratulations you are an automatic member!
If you're not, then you can choose to become one (for a small fee) or come on
down anyway. The Door is open...as long as the property and staff are respected
at all times, you'll be served with a smile.
The clubhouse is the epicentre of our Association. It is a social space for you
guys. So flex your privileged entitlements, and let’s have some interesting
days and nights....
We're thinking..
Poetry readings Live Music
Film nights Wii Competitions
Cook off's Barbecue’sFancy dressing
Cheese and Wine
Tango Lessons etc etc...
What about those who leave the campus at six, you say?! Well, how about
live music with your lunch? or any of the above activities? ... send us an
email if you have any thoughts on this matter! x
We have a clubhouse that needs some love and affection people!! There will be
painting, planting, pointing and allot of laughing over the next few months.
Please pop in to see how we're getting on - or even to pick up a brush!!
Where there is fun- there is always politics!
The Association is working
hard to represent its members to the university.
We are particularily concerned with:
The PGR space issues ...
Yes, once again there will be office moves. Understandably, there were allot of
capillaries broken over this last year. Our team have been working hard on
this issue. And we are happy to tell you that it is being dealt with
'proactively' by the relevant persons in the University. Of course this gives
us no guarantees. So, we are on the ball, kicking the ball and pumping up its
leathered exterior constantly. (If you have any concerns, complaints or questions regarding this-give
Lyndsey a ring or send an email to kpachair@keele.ac.uk)
International Students and the Winter Graduation Ceremony Which came first? The visa expirory date, or the graduation ceremony?
You guessed it. Keele Postgraduate Association are working with the relevant people to have
this changed. Needless to say, a graduation ceremony is an integral part of the
student experience. Something that should not be missed. It's an opportunity to
finish off ones time at university looking fabulous and drinking champagne (or
one glass of cheap wine). Very recently, the association has been informed of a
report that is due to be released regarding this issue, the Association will
have its views published. Watch this space... (If you have any concerns, complaints or questions regarding
this-give Lyndsey a ring or send an email to kpachair@keele.ac.uk)
Library Opening Hours Summer vacation is here. The smell of barbecues, cut grass and the sound of
the library doors being locked at 5pm. If Keele wants to be a player on
the big league table, then it's going to have to extend its services for those
who have jobs and can't make it down until after five.
We are working really hard on this issue.. (If you have any concerns, complaints or questions regarding
this-give Lyndsey a ring or send an email to kpachair@keele.ac.uk)
With so many Postgraduate students both on and off campus,
there will inevitably be many issues to deal with. We are hungry for more. If
you have broken a nail and kind find your tweezers - give me a call!!
Looking forward to working hard for you this year. I asked for this job. You
gave it to me.
Many thanks and Happy Summer! x
