The 2012-13 Sociological Review Fellowship was awarded to Dr. Hayder Al-Mohammad.

The Editorial Board of The Sociological Review offer a writing fellowship open to social scientists working in any area of sociology, social anthropology or related disciplines. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide early career sociologists and social anthropologists with the opportunity of spending a year writing their first monograph length book. It is expected that the successful applicant will be just completing or within approximately two years of having completed a PhD in sociology, social anthropology or a cognate discipline. Also, they should not have published a book but should have had at least one piece of work from their PhD accepted for publication (eg a journal article or book chapter) and not currently be holding a permanent lectureship at an institution of Higher Education.

Job Description:

  • To prepare work for publication from the PhD on a topic which is capable of being turned into a successful book
  • To submit a book proposal to a publisher
  • To prepare a research bid to an external funding body and submit it during the period of the research
  • To develop links with an appropriate social science department at Keele
  • To liaise with the Editorial Office of The Sociological Review in order to undertake a small amount of work for the journal (eg book reviewing, paper refereeing) as appropriate
  • To give a seminar presentation at the end of the fellowship on some aspect of work undertaken during the fellowship
  • To provide progress reports as requested

The fellowship offers a salary for one year. Office space, use of a computer, access to Keele's library/information services and e-mail are provided plus a mentor (chosen on the basis of academic fit with the successful candidate) plus the opportunity to gain an insight into how an academic journal in the social sciences operates.

How to Apply

Applications should include a full CV, a letter (up to 2 pages long) saying why you should be considered for the fellowship, two short pieces of work - chosen from the following items: submitted or accepted articles (from journals or edited books), conference papers or thesis chapters and the names of two referees (one should be your PhD supervisor). We also require a book proposal - an outline of a maximum of 3 pages of the proposed book in a form suitable for sending to publishers ie containing brief biographical details, book rationale, chapter outlines with a paragraph on each, market for it and any competing books. Appliants may apply via e-mail or by hard copy (we require three copies of all hard copy applications).
