I graduated from the Open University with a first degree in Education and Psychology. I completed a Masters in Social Work at the University of London , Royal Holloway and Bedford New College .  I was awarded a PhD at Keele University in 2000.  My research explored the impact of long term illness and disability on long established relationships in the context of long-term marriage.

I am currently a Senior Lecturer and until December 2009 was the Programme Director for the MA Social Work.  From January 2010 I am on a secondment within Keele University (.7) to promote the development of continuous professional development initiatives, academic courses and short courses with a focus on active ageing/ageing studies.  I completed an ESRC Research Fellowship in 2006/07.  I have worked in the social care field for over 20 years. Since qualifying as a social worker, I have worked as a practitioner and manager in a specialist team for older people and a community care team. I have also taught for several years at the Open University (School of Health and Social Welfare) and have been an off-site practice teacher.

My consultancy work includes designing and delivering in-service training courses in person centred dementia care and a variety of audit and user involvement studies. I have been a project worker at the Royal College of Nursing in partnership with the Alzheimer's Society where I developed standards of care for people with dementia living in a care home. I have undertaken a variety of practice development projects including a contract with Powys Social Services exploring issues in person centred practice and unified assessment and with Stoke Older Persons’ services exploring the role of biography in person centred practice in care homes.  I have undertaken two projects with older people exploring their experience of living in a care home (Anchor Housing).

My research interests focus on:

  • Promoting good practice in dementia care and care of older people (particularly in care home settings)
  • Practice development (social work and social care)
  • Social relationships in older age
  • Participatory frameworks for research

Further information can be obtained via the Research Institute web pages

My secondment does not include a specific teaching load.  However, I have until December 2009 taught on a range of social work courses and been module leader for:

  • Area of Practice, Social Work with Adults (MA1)
  • Area of Practice, Social Work with Adults (BA2)
  • Social Work Processes (BA1)
  • Personal and Professional Development (MA1)

I also regularly contribute teaching on the MA Gerontology/MSc Geriatric Medicine.
