Welcome to Social Work @ Keele
Social work training has a long tradition at Keele, dating back to the 1960's and is associated with key figures in the profession such as Olive Stevenson and Dame Jo Williams. We are highly praised by our partner agencies, student groups and service user partners for the high level of support given to students on the programmes and close working relationships.
Education and Training at Keele is delivered by an enthusiastic staff group who bring a wide variety of experience from practice and who are all research active and retain strong links with practice. Staff interests include, Child rights, gerontology, ethnicity, rural social work and the value base of social work.
Social work is a regulated profession. As a social work student you will be expected to register with the General Social Care Council (GSCC), the social work profession’s regulator, and adhere to the standards set out in the Code of Practice for Social Workers.
As well as regulating individual social workers and students, the GSCC also regulates the performance of social work courses, the reports of which are published on their website, so you can check to see how each university is performing. For more information visit: www.gscc.org.uk
Social Work @ Keele is ranked 3rd in the country by Guardian League Tables and 4th in the Complete University Guide.
Social Work @ Keele is part of the highly successful School of Public Policy and Professional Practice. Research active staff are members of the Research Institute for Social Sciences. In RAE 2008, 95% of research across the main areas submitted was judged to be of international quality.
The research interests of staff are broad, with strengths in the study of ageing populations, poverty and social exclusion, young people and youth policy, changing patterns of family ties, and globalisation trends. Research is funded by Research Council (ESRC), the European Union, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Nuffield Trust.
