Neil and Gina Smith Student of the Year Award 2007

Suzy Stokes

suzystokes The University is delighted to announce that the 2007 winner of the prestigious Neil and Gina Smith Student of the Year Award is Suzy Stokes. Suzy has been based at Keele University Medical School for Years Three to Five of her medical degree.

During her time at Keele, Suzy has performed extremely well academically, gaining a number of prizes including the Donald Kemp Memorial Prize in 2005, the Year 4 Progress Prize in 2005 and the Royal College of Forensic Psychiatrists Essay Prize in 2005.

In addition to her strong academic performance, Suzy has made a strong contribution to Keele University and the wider community through her extracurricular activities. She is joint coordinator and founder of the bone marrow charity “Marrow Keele”. This year, Suzy was co-author of a published research paper on HIV testing.

She has travelled across Europe and to America and Africa gaining experience and training in, amongst other things, wilderness medicine, altitude medicine and space medicine. Whilst studying for her degree, Suzy completed the level one British Sign Language qualification.

Suzy impressed the interview panel, which consisted of both internal and external representatives, with her commitment to her subject, her academic achievements to date and her enthusiastic contribution to the wider community through her extra curricular activities. It was felt that Suzy is an extremely deserving winner of the Neil and Gina Smith Student of the Year Award who will be an excellent ambassador for Keele University.
