The Royal Society of Chemistry has created a new award named after Derek Birchall, the 'Materials for Industry - Derek Birchall Award' (see below and weblink). The 1st award winner is Patrick McGrail from the University of Sheffield.

The creation of this award gives some indication of the high esteem with which Derek and his research was held. As the Birchall Centre , named after Derek after his tragic death in a road accident in 1996, is going through a process of reinvigoration and rejuvenation (which no doubt Derek would be delighted by) the creation of this prestigious national award comes at a fitting time.
