'Branded Lives' Book Launches

This week saw the launch of a new book ‘Branded Lives: The Production and Consumption of Meaning at Work’ edited Matthew Brannan and Liz Parsons (Keele Management School) and former Keele colleague, Cinzia Priola now at Aston University.
The book explores the increasingly popular concept of ‘employee branding’ as a new form of employment relationship based on brand representation, and draws upon series of organisational casestudies. The book highlights the ways in which the production and consumption of meaning at work is increasingly mediated by organisational brands and how employees are now, more than ever, being asked to ‘live the brand’. At a time when many organisation are redesigning their brand image, this book is a timely reminder of the full complexity of brands at work.
The noted American Organisational Theorist, Mary Jo Hatch said about the book, “(it) explodes the myth that a brand must, or even can stand for one unified, easily communicated message. While warning of the dangers of managing to preserve this myth, the book also celebrates the plurality of brand meanings generated by those employed to serve both the brand and the customer. I recommend reading this book in its entirety”.

Sir David F. Hendry Delivers 2011 Annual Distinguished Lecture in Economics

Sir David F. Hendry from the Department of Economics and Institute for Economic Modelling, University of Oxford, delivered the 2011 Annual Distinguished Lecture in Economics on Thursday 17th March. The lecture, titled 'Empirical Model Discovery and Theory Evaluation', was well attended with members of staff, students and the public present.
Professor Hendry argued that despite important differences, discovery and evaluation in economics are similar to those of natural science. Instead of fitting a pre-specified model which restricts discovery, he advocated automatic modelling methods which help to formulate very general models which embed and evaluate the initial economic theory and allow for a rigorous evaluation of selected models to ascertain their viability. Professor Hendry illustrated his key claims with live econometric modelling.

Letter from Professor Costas Milas Published in Financial Times

In a letter published by The Financial Times, Professor Costas Milas argues that the latest credit decisions made by The Moody's credit rating agency are at best questionable.
He argues that the latest reduction of Greek bonds to "highly speculative" status puts at risk the recovery hopes of Greece and those of other peripheral countries faced with the prospect of a similar decision.
Professor Milas refers to recent academic work which suggests that only a minority of credit decisions made by all main credit rating agencies are justified by economic fundamentals and concludes that peripheral countries have a point in complaining about the behaviour of credit rating agencies.

Letter from Professor Costas Milas Published in Financial Times

The Financial Times published a letter from Professor Costas Milas, lecturer in Economics, in which he questioned the use of government bond yields as reliable indicators of sovereign risk in Eurozone economies. Costas made the case that peripheral economies faced with a high risk of default are currently experiencing borrowing costs that might contradict all publicly available information.
Costas also commented to the Financial Times about how Basel changes will hit Greece’s debt, stating that ‘weak growth might force Ireland and Greece to restructure their debt. The Basel III agreement, which sets core tier one capital ratio at 7 per cent, poses an additional threat to Greece. In an attempt to calm financial markets, European banks are expected to adjust to the new rules sooner than later. European banks are also expected to set a capital ratio of about 12 per cent in good times. This will definitely put pressure on Greek banks to do the same since they already face extremely high borrowing costs.
With Greece in recession until late 2011 and very weak growth expected afterwards, such a move will deprive the domestic market from credit to consumers and companies, pushing the country into making debt restructuring even more likely'.
Costas is no stranger to the media as he is regularly called upon to comment on the state of the economy by BBC Radio Stoke and contributes as a business commentator to the two largest, and most prestigious, Greek newspapers, Kathimerini and To Vima.
