Teenage Kicks Conference held at Keele
A conference on youth subcultures as represented in fiction, film and other media took place at Keele last week.
Named after the famous Undertones song, the conference brought together academics, film-makers, creative writers and artists, and there were papers and talks on Mod, Punk, Skinhead, Hip-Hop, Heavy Metal, Rave and other subcultural groups.
The conference was a great success with talks from keynote speakers Professors Shane Blackman (Canterbury Christ Church University) and Scott Wilson (Kingston University), and readings from novelists Alan Fletcher and Courttia Newland. Don Letts, the legendary DJ, film-maker, and member of Big Audio Dynamite, showed his recent film Subcultures, and took questions from a lively audience.
The conference organizers were Dr Nick Bentley (English), Dr Beth Johnson (English and Film Studies), Dr Mark Featherstone (Sociology and MCC) and Dr Andy Zieleniec (Sociology and MCC) and was part of a series of events connected to the Cultural Research Group at Keele. Some of the sessions at the conference were funded by the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute.
