National Conference on Legal Education
Professor Fiona Cownie, School of Law, in her capacity as Chair of the Legal Education Committee of the Society of Legal Scholars, organised and spoke at a one-day conference on the future of legal education at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London. It attracted nearly 100 delegates from all over the UK and is the largest conference to be held to date, focusing on the current national Legal Education and Training Review.
Dame Janet Gaymer, Co-Chair of the Review's Consultation panel, gave an update on the Review, which is intended to take into account the considerable changes in the organisation of the legal profession brought about by the Legal Services Act 2007, whereby lawyers will be able to operate Alternative Business Structures alongside members of other professions, which has not previously been possible.
Academic speakers included Professor Tony Bradney, from Keele's School of Law, who is an expert on legal education and Professor Andrew Sanders, Chair of the Committee of Heads of University Law Schools.
Other speakers included Baroness Deech, Chair of the Bar Standards Board, Antony Townsend, the Chief Executive of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Chris Kenny, the Chief Executive of the Legal Services Board.
