Role: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

I joined Keele as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in 2010. My research project is entitled “Paediatric Medical Trust: the relationships among parents, young people, and physicians, and examines the role that interpersonal trust and other social factors play in the treatment of children and young people with asthma and diabetes. For this project I was awarded by the EU within the FP7, Marie Curie Actions, IEF programme.

Prior to this, I worked as Assistant Professor (Teaching Fellow) at the Universita’ Cattolica di Milano, Italy (2005-2010), in various courses on clinical and developmental psychology and on research methodology and data analysis. I also worked in the Psychology department at the Universita’ Cattolica within the Research Unit on Theory of Mind, where I participated to some research projects on typical development, deafness and autism. I was awarded my PhD in 2008. My thesis examined the extension to which theory of mind and interpersonal trust, jointly considered, develop and the extension to which the two constructs predict the trustworthiness and the trustworthy behaviour. I completed my BSc and MSc (with honour) in Psychology at Universita’ Cattolica di Milano (Italy). My thesis dealt with the theory of mind ability in children who are deaf and in their hearing mothers.

My research interests lie mainly within the areas of developmental and clinical psychology. In particular, I am interested in the issues of theory of mind, interpersonal trust and children-adults relationships. At present I am examining the role that interpersonal trust and other social factors plays in the treatment of children and young people with asthma and diabetes. In particular, I deal with the extension to which trust in physicians, and other psychosocial factors, predicts the children’s adherence to medical regime. I am also studying the parents’ reaction to diagnosis and the parents’ mental representations of the relationship with a child who is autistic or deaf. As a part of my clinical background, I developed and conducted a clinical intervention program for speech therapists of deaf children.
