Sian Maslin-Prothero was the Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Nursing at the Keele University School of Nursing and Midwifery, Staffordshire, United Kingdom until July 2010.  She has worked in academia, education, clinical nursing and midwifery in a variety of settings in both the United Kingdom and overseas. Sian has honorary Chairs with: Edith Cowan University, Western Australia, Australia; the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia; the University of Southampton, Southampton (UK); and Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire (UK).

She believes in developing individuals in order that they fulfil their potential by fostering skills and strategies that encourage them to be creative, critical thinkers who can respond to the dynamic healthcare environment and the requirements of users, and has worked in partnership with the National Health Service, social services, voluntary services and people who access services through education, research and practice.

She has a Masters of Science degree from the University of Bristol and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Nottingham.  Her research interests include: user and carer involvement, policy and practice issues in health and social services, complementary therapies in cancer, and recruitment clinical trials. She has successfully managed a number of funded research projects in these areas. Currently she has six PhD students.  She reviews for a number of national and international research councils.

She is widely published, with many of her books being translated into other languages; and is the Associate Editor for Nurse Education Today, and a member of the editorial board for the European Journal of Cancer Care.
