Katie started a foundation year at Keele University in 2008 after spending 4 years working full time in a variety of jobs including care work, cleaning, bar work and sales. During her undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology, Katie also volunteered for a local young person’s mental health charity and has a passion for research that empowers marginalised groups and works towards social change. Katie’s undergraduate dissertation was a project that used photography to engage with young adults recovering from mental health issues in order to understand their lived experiences of mental health recovery. The project won several university awards and a stakeholder event was held at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery where the young adults’ photographs were displayed. Katie’s PhD research is a critical examination of intergenerational practice – a tool advocated by some as a way to increase health and wellbeing, build cohesive communities and work towards social change
