My PhD project is an online ethnography of the fan community of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels and the Game of Thrones television adaptation.
George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series (1991-current) has recently erupted from the status of little-known work of fiction to the source material of Game of Thrones (2011-current), the most pirated television show of 2012. In summary, the research covers: expectations and pleasure, tensions in discussions about representations of nudity, the embodiment of literary characters, fans’ relationships with producers, textual boundaries, and the relationship between visual imagery and mental images.
