Music and Music Technology

Music is an established group of scholars comprising 8 academic staff and 7 research students. Its research outputs have received recognition worldwide: the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated 81.9% of the outputs submitted as either 'world-leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*), which ranks Keele Music and Music Technology in the top-three highest UK academic institutions. The Music Technology Group is one of the largest teams in UK Higher Education focusing on the creative aspects of technology. It comprises composers working with digital media, purely acoustic and mixed resources, audiovisual composition, algorithmic composition, theory and aesthetics, music software development and most recently, interactivity with time-based media. Ongoing projects include Dr. Spasov’s work on the application of developments in cognitive science for gesture capture, vocal tracking and bodily kinetics. The Musicology Group produces world leading and internationally excellent research in European music since 1900. Interests include French, Polish and German music, analysis, critical theory, cultural history, film music, and more recently music psychology and media.  Prof. Kelly and Dr. Williams recently gained AHRC Fellowships to complete monograph projects on French Musical Modernisms: aesthetics and criticism and Music in Germany since 1968.
