From Boys to Men; New Research Study on Domestic Violence

Domestic abuse is an enduring problem in many countries. Efforts to protect victims and raise awareness are having only a limited effect on younger generations of men, a sizeable minority of whom still grow up to become perpetrators. The From Boys to Men Project was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to explore why some boys become domestic abuse perpetrators when others do not. The aim of the research was to establish what more can be done to reduce the number of young men who become perpetrators.

The project is now drawing to a close; more information about the project can be found at: www.boystomenproject.com, including information about the project’s methods and findings. It provides a forum for debate about what more can be done to address domestic abuse.  It also provides resources to equip others to conduct research in their own contexts (schools, colleges, youth groups) to enable the identification of victims and potential perpetrators of domestic abuse in order that appropriate intervention might be applied to support those individuals.

The project is being led by Professor David Gadd at the University of Manchester. Dr Claire Fox, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Keele University, is a co-investigator on the project; contact email: c.fox@keele.ac.uk.
