BBC 5 Live Discussion Guest
Dr Brian Doherty, RC4SPIRE, Research Institute for Social Sciences, was an invited guest in a discussion on the Olympics, Security and Protest, on the Victoria Derbyshire show on BBC5 Live last week.
He talked about the importance of the traditions of protest at the Olympics and the danger that statements by the police and government can deter participation in protest by talking about it principally as a security threat.
He challenged the idea presented by Bob Quick (previous head of counter-terrorism at the Met) that protesters should discuss their plans with the police, pointing out that recent evidence of deception by undercover police, kettling and classifying non-violent peace and environmental activists as 'domestic extremists' has made this unlikely.
