Progress and Monitoring

Full details of the progress and monitoring proceedures for PGR students can be found in Section 3 of the University's Code of Practice.

We recommend that you look through these details, and discuss the requirements with your supervisory team.

Some of the key progress milestones and requirements are highlighted below.

Personal Development and Learning Plan

All PGR students, together with their supervisory team, are required to complete, and continually update, a Personal Development and Learning Plan.

All PGRs must submit a full copy of the Personal Development and Learning Plan to the Research Institute, typically within 6 weeks of their start date. For those starting their PhD in September, we request submission of your Plan by 15th November (for full time students) and 17th December (for part-time students), unless agreed otherwise with the PGR Director.

A pro forma for the Plan is available on the Graduate School website, item C10.

Plans should be submitted to the Postgraduate Administrators at the following addresses:

Humanities: humanities.phd@keele.ac.uk

Social Sciences, excluding Professional Doctorates: socialsciences.phd@keele.ac.uk

Professional Doctorates: socialsciences.profdoc@keele.ac.uk

Progress Reports

All PGR students, including those who are part-time and on continuation status, are required to submit Progress Reports at 6-monthly intervals.

Progress Reports will be requested by the PGR Administrators in the Research Institute for the following deadlines each year:

  • 25th October
  • 25th March

You must submit to each deadline except where you have started your studies less than 6 weeks before the deadline.

Part One of the report must be submitted by the Lead Supervisor.

Part Two of the report must be submitted by the student, via a Keele email address.

Reports should be sent to the following email addresses in good time for the deadline:

Humanities: humanities.phd@keele.ac.uk

Social Sciences, excluding Professional Doctorates: socialsciences.phd@keele.ac.uk

Professional Doctorates: socialsciences.profdoc@keele.ac.uk

It is the Lead Supervisor’s responsibility to ensure that Part One of the progress report form is completed and submitted to the for each deadline.

It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that Part Two of the progress report form is completed and submitted for each deadline, together with the most up-to-date version of the Personal Development and Learning Plan. Failure by the student to complete their progress report form or to keep their Personal Development and Learning Plan up to date is likely to lead to the student receiving a low grade.

The Progress Reports pro forma is available on the Graduate School website, item C9.

Full details of Formal Doctoral Progression procedures for PGRs are set out in the Code of Practice. For Professional Doctorate students, please consult the course Handbook for full details.

Should you have any queries relating to Formal Doctoral Progression, please contact our PGR Administrators in the first instance:
