  • Translational genomics pipeline: from populations to individuals, 18-21 June 2012, Cambridge

The ability to better diagnose, treat, and ultimately cure disease depends on understanding its genetic causes and translating this information into new diagnostic tests and therapeutics.

Translational research provides the data and tools necessary to identify the genes that play a role in hereditable diseases. The field of translational genomics is evolving rapidly and acquired knowledge is already finding practical applications. However, the path leading from basic discovery to clinical applications poses new challenges.

Hosted by the Wellcome Trust in association with the European Network of Genetic and Genomic Epidemiology (ENGAGE) and the Public Population Project in Genomics (P3G), the event will be a forum for discussing the latest key issues and challenges that arise in translating clinical results from genomic research, as well as potential approaches and solutions. Session topics will include:

  • introduction to translational genomics: potential, challenges and milestones;
  • genomics data- optimising access and use;
  • pharmacogenomics;
  • from public health genomics to personalised medicine;
  • translating genomics into public health- infectious diseases and host genomics.

  • New frontiers in anisotropic fluid-particles composites, 28-29 June 2012, Buckinghamshire

Anisotropy is the property of being directionally dependent, as opposed to isotropy, which implies identical properties in all directions. It can be defined as a difference, when measured along different axes, in a material's physical or mechanical properties.

The conference will cover two areas of research: isotropic particles in anisotropic liquid crystals and colloidal liquid crystals (clay platelets or carbon nanotubes in isotropic fluids for example). These two subjects are rich in complex science and have substantial applications potential ranging from e-inks through to biofluidics.

  • Launch of the FP7 2013 Work Programmes for the “Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology” and “Environment (including climate change)” Themes, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 6th July 2012, London

Co-hosted by Defra, BBSRC, NERC and FSA, this information day is for everyone interested in two key thematic areas of FP7 and taking part in the 2013 work programme calls, to be published in July.

This meeting will feature:

  • Presentations from the European Commission’s DG Research and Innovation on the 2013 work programmes for the “Food, Agriculture and    Fisheries, and Biotechnology” and “Environment (including climate change)” themes.
  • Information on the opportunities available in other FP7 and European Research Area activities including the ‘Ideas’ and ‘People’ programmes.
  • Presentations by FP7 projects in the Food/Agriculture and Environment areas, along with lessons learned about participating in the programme.
  • An update on Horizon 2020, the next EU framework programme for research and innovation (2014-20).

Beta Technology, the UK National Contact Point for the Food/Agriculture and Environment themes, will be available all day to provide information and advice on participation in FP7.  The event will also provide an opportunity to network with others interested in EU collaborative research.

  • Sustainable Energy week, 18th – 22nd June 2012, Brussels

Every year hundreds of organisations and individuals in over 30 countries take part in EU Sustainable Energy week by hosting Energy Day events and activities that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.  An Energy Day is defined as a not-for-profit event, activity, project, exhibition or display that promotes energy efficiency or renewable energy.

  • Open information day and brokerage event for FP7-KBBE-2013-7 call, 16 July 2012, Brussels

The event, organised by the Commission's -DG Research and Innovation is being organised to highlight the 2013 Work Programme of FP7 KBBE , which is due to be published on 10 July 2012.

The programme will consist of plenary sessions and several parallel workshops on participating in FP7 KBBE. Participants will also be able to exchange information and network at a special session where various service providers will be present.

Session topics are set to include:

  • sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environment;
  • fork to farm: food (including seafood), health and wellbeing;
  • life sciences, biotechnology and bio-chemistry for sustainable non-food products and processes.

The conference will bring together research stakeholders, from both the public and private sectors from the EU and Third Countries, together with the Commission, to provide information and to find partners for projects to be funded under the upcoming FP7-KBBE-2013-7 call.
