Ralf Gertisser To mark the 200th anniversary of the largest volcanic eruption in recent historic times, Dr Ralf Gertisser, Senior Lecturer in Mineralogy and Petrology, School of Physical and Geographical Sciences, co-authored, with Professor Stephen Self (University of California, Berkeley), a commentary in Nature Geoscience on the future risks from large volcanic eruptions.

This month marks the anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tambora, Sumbawa, Indonesia on the 10-11 April 1815.  The eruption killed more than 60,000 people in what is now Indonesia and brought the "Year without a Summer" (1816) to Europe and North America.
