Chris Phillipson keynote speaker at international conference
Professor Chris Phillipson was the key note speaker at the Australian National Community Care Conference held in Adelaide.
Professor Phillipson was invited to speak about his work on the relationship between population ageing and urbanisation and the development of age-friendly cities.
His presentation examined ways of transforming urban environments to meet the needs of older populations and identifying strategies for working with the variety of agencies and services supporting older people. Work on urbanisation and ageing has emerged as an important strand of research in social gerontology at Keele.
Professor Phillipson led a successful bid for an ESRC grant under the International Partnership and Networking Scheme. This brings together research teams across Europe and the USA to work on funding proposals around cities and population change.
There is also an extensive programme of work with Manchester City Council who have supported a research post with Keele to assist their own development as an age-friendly city.
